Data-bearing and configuration-bearing assets need different procedures. Both end at the same gate.
Data-bearing assets
Certified Erasure, per Unit
Servers, storage, chassis and route processors with HDDs, SSDs or removable media are erased with certified erasure software. A signed, tamper-evident report records what was erased, by which method, by whom and when.
Configuration-bearing assets
Config-Erase and Reimage
Most routers and switches hold configuration in NVRAM and onboard flash. A documented procedure removes configurations, clears NVRAM, strips certificates, keys and credentials, loads clean firmware and captures verification.
The gate
Release from quarantine is a system event triggered only by a certificate, never a decision made on the floor. Media that fail erasure are physically destroyed and certified.
